The end of the 10 blue links

For twenty years, the deal was simple. You typed a query, Google handed back ten blue links, and the game of SEO was to climb that list. Entire industries were built on the assumption that the SERP was the destination, that ranking was the work.
That assumption is quietly falling apart.
Search is no longer a list
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude. Ask any of them what they would have once asked Google. You do not get a list. You get an answer. Sometimes with citations, sometimes without. The user reads the answer and moves on. The click, the lifeblood of the old web, never happens.
Even on Google itself, AI Overviews now sit above the organic results for an ever-growing share of queries. Studies through 2026 show click-through rates on the classic top-10 dropping by 30 to 60 percent on commercial intent searches once an overview is present.
If your strategy is still measured in positions one through ten, you are optimizing for a slot that fewer and fewer people are looking at.
What replaces ranking
We think the right frame is visibility, not ranking. Visibility is the probability that your brand, product or perspective shows up at the moment a buyer is making a decision, wherever that decision happens.
Practically, that means caring about four surfaces at once:
- Google organic, still the largest single channel, still worth winning.
- Google AI Overviews, a different game, with different inputs.
- LLM answers, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and whatever ships next quarter.
- Social and community, Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, the places LLMs go to find their training data.
How we build for it
Serpier is built around the assumption that the surfaces will keep multiplying and the rules of each will keep shifting. We do not chase any single algorithm. We instrument the things that travel well across all of them: clear positioning, durable content, a citation footprint that LLMs can find, and a publishing cadence that matches how fast the answer layer is being rewritten.
The 10 blue links are not coming back. The good news is that the brands paying attention now will own the next decade of discovery.
